10 Jul World Health Organisation Warns Of Global Spread Of Untreatable Gonorrhoea Superbug
Gonorrhoea is one of the worst sexually-transmitted diseases to contract for a variety of reasons. It is a bacterial infection that tends to infect warm, moist areas of the body, which includes the vagina, throat, urethra, anus and eyes. The World Health Organisation estimates that up to 78 million people a year are affected by the STD.
Women are at greater risk of long-term complications when infections are untreated. Pelvic inflammatory disease can occur, causing severe pain and damage to the female reproductive organs. Men can develop a painful abscesses inside their penis, as well as suffering from scarring of the urethra, which can ultimately lead to infertility. If the infection spreads into the bloodstream, it can cause heart valve damage, arthritis or inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
But the most dangerous thing about gonorrhoea is how hard it is to identify. Symptoms usually occur within two weeks of contracting the disease, but they are often mild and can be confused with other more common infections. Some don’t experience any symptoms at all, but still carry the infection to pass on to others.
Yet there it is possible that gonorrhoea may become even more formidable of a disease, as the WHO warns of new strains of the infection that may become impervious to current medicine.
