Take twerking, for example. A simple dance with roots in traditional African moves has taken the world by storm with many across the world seizing any opportunity to pop their booties.

Israel might be the last place you’d expect to find a vibrant twerking culture, but it certainly exists. Gal BePole, a self-described twerk pioneer, is considered the founder of the twerk movement in Israel. Inspired by her travels and a quest to build self-confidence through movement, Gal has gained a range of experience in dancing and pole fitness. After establishing the Israeli twerk team, she also set up the Israeli twerk championship and is very vocal about her mission to help women embrace their curves.

If you were surprised by the existence of a global twerk competition in Israel, you might be shocked by what’s going on in China. In a move similar to the infamous Miss Bumbum competition in Brazil, a ‘Most Beautiful Buttocks’ contest recently held in China to find – you guessed it – the young lady with the best behind. On June 24, 19-year-old Gao Qian emerged as the winner of the competition – a title which came with a cash prize of 5,000 yuan (around $730).
