Thanks to modern day technology, we are all able to escape certain situations. Be it a terrible date which ends when your best friend calls you with an ’emergency’ or a burst tire which is fixed by a quick call to the nearest garage. We have a lot to thank telephones and cell phones for.

But there are few people who could credit a cell phone with saving their life quite like one anonymous woman who used it to escape the evil clutches of a serial killer who had abducted her. In an incredibly brave move, the woman called 911 whilst her captor slept.

The abductor, who is now known to be 41-year-old Shawn Micheal Grate, was apprehended at the scene. He is currently standing trial for his crimes, which includes the murders of two women, kidnapping, sexual assault, breaking and entering, burglary and tampering with evidence.

Since being arrested, Grate has admitted to the murder of five women, with the body of two of these women being discovered in the house from which his abducted victim called 911. However, he insists that he had no intention to murder the woman who called 911. Instead, he planned to marry her.

According to Grate, he technically didn’t kill any women because they were all “already dead” as far as he was concerned. Speaking to a Cleveland television reporter the serial killer explained:  “They were already dead. Just their bodies were flopping wherever it can flop but their minds were already dead! The state took their minds. Once they started receiving their monthly checks.”

Despite the brazen admittance of his crimes, Grate is pleading not guilty to the charges held against him. A decision, he claims, his lawyers made for him, but one he’s happy to accept for his fear of being sentenced to death. “I’m afraid of the death penalty. … I’d like to die on my own and not by the state,” the serial killer explains.

The Ohio-native is currently standing trial, with opening statements having begun on April 23. Whilst it isn’t clear exactly how the case will play out, there is no doubt that this chilling audio clip will play a crucial role in his sentencing.
