It’s only natural to want to know more about your family history. While most of us are fortunate enough to know a fair amount about our relatives, thanks to services like Ancestry.com, it’s possible to trace back our family history hundreds of years to find out even more.

Using DNA samples, these services can provide people with an unprecedented amount of information about their past, and for 36-year-old Kelli Rowlette from Washington, this yielded a surprise she had never contemplated when she sent off her DNA for testing last year.

Instead of finding out that she had relations who were perhaps famous or from elsewhere in the world, Rowlette discovered that the man she had believed to be her biological father was not, even though her parents had been happily married at the time of her birth.

According to Ancestry.com, she had a parent-child match with a man who had also submitted his DNA to the service and lived 500 miles away, although she initially assumed that there had been a mistake and was “disappointed”.

Naturally, Rowlette went to her now-divorced parents, Howard Fowler and Sally Ashby, after making the discovery and that’s when she discovered that she had been conceived using IVF which supposedly consisted of her father and an anonymous donor’s sperm.
