While interracial relationships are hardly uncommon these days, there are still many people who have no tolerance towards others dating outside their race.
Texan-born Stephanie Hicks is a 20-year-old woman who was in an interracial relationship with her boyfriend Nike. They had been trying to shed light on their story in a bid to combat the bigotry that interracial couples continue to deal with on an everyday basis.
Their desire to draw attention to the issue was triggered by Stephanie’s own father and a bigoted letter he wrote, unfairly slating their relationship.
In the letter, he gives his daughter Stephanie an ultimatum: she has to choose between himself or her boyfriend. From the tone of the letter, it is pretty clear that he is serious about disowning his daughter if she does not end things with Nike, referring to the couple as being in “a disgusting relationship”.
So, how did Stephanie handle the situation? Well, one thing’s for sure, she definitely did not give her bigoted dad the satisfaction of ending the relationship. At least not initially…
Stephanie took a photo of the letter, scribbled out a few chunks of text and uploaded it to Twitter with the caption “Sad that it’s 2016 and skin color still matters.”
Unfortunately, to Stephanie’s dad, who claims to be a devout Christian, it mattered a great deal.
“I hoped I would eventually take the high road and come to accept an interracial relationship,” the letter reads. “The truth is that I’m human, and I make choices of my own.”
Stephanie’s father then goes into greater detail about his disgust concerning the relationship:
“My belief is that interracial relationships are despicable. Vulgar and reprehensible. There’s nothing worse than a half-black, and I’m crushed that my own daughter has entered into such a disgusting relationship.”
He had clearly put a lot of thought into the letter, and even said that he would put aside three empty suitcases which Stephanie could use to pack her belongings if she continued to see Nike against his wishes.
It didn’t take long for Stephanie’s tweet to go viral. In fact, it was retweeted thousands of times and attracted many sympathetic commenters who were appalled by her father’s vile words.
Eventually, Nike decided to support his girlfriend by contributing to the conversation, which at that point had already been seen thousands of times.
Nike posted screenshots of the racist tweets he had come across on the social media platform.
