It probably shouldn’t infuriate me so much, but one of the most judgemental things that I routinely hear people ask out loud is “what does he/she see in him/her?” Even individuals who are typically reasonable and empathic are guilty of this kind of snap judgement when observing the relationships of other people at a distance, and make wild assumptions about who’s compatible with whom.

Now I’m not talking about people who judge others based on personality: if you see two people whose personalities just don’t match, or who might even be victims of abusive behaviour, then you have every right to call it out. But more often than not, people are only really concerned about whether people’s looks match up. It’s as if aesthetics are all we really care about.

It’s completely irrational, but as a society we tend to hold the view that there are certain ‘tiers’ or physical attractiveness, much like some kind of elaborate caste system underlying the world of dating and relationships, and that lasting relationships can only be fostered between those who match in terms of physical characteristics. Someone who had been arbitrarily marked as 9/10 could never go out with someone who was only 3/10. The very idea would be treated as an aberration, despite the fact that physical attractiveness is a purely subjective quality.

In the age of social media, most people (particularly women) have even more cause to be hyper-aware and uncomfortably conscious of their looks, especially in comparison to their partners. Body-shaming trolls and cruel comments are sadly common when the majority judges two people to be physically dissimilar. But this week, a brave body-positive woman has struck back against her critics, with an inspired post that lays her body, and marriage, bare.
