14 Jun Woman on Trial for ‘Driving Boyfriend to Suicide’ Through Disturbing Texts

A Massachusetts woman, whose boyfriend took his own life nearly three years ago, has gone on trial for allegedly bombarding him with text messages urging him to kill himself. Prosecutors claim that Michelle Carter, then 17, drove Conrad Roy III to his death in order to attract sympathy as “the grieving girlfriend”.

The now 20-year-old is charged with involuntary manslaughter for her alleged role in the suicide of her former partner, who was found dead due to carbon monoxide poisoning in his pick-up truck at a Kmart car park in Fairhavens, Massachusetts on 13 July 2014.

Records presented by the the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office show that Carter texted her boyfriend on the morning of 12 July 2014 telling him: “You need to do it, Conrad. You’re ready and prepared. All you have to do is turn the generator on and you will be free and happy.” In another message, she apparently said: “You’re finally going to be happy in heaven. No more pain. It’s okay to be scared and it’s normal. I mean, you’re about to die.”

Despite Roy expressing doubts over whether he should kill himself, Cater allegedly pressed him further saying: “I thought you wanted to do this. The time is right and you’re ready … just do it babe. No more pushing it off. No more waiting.”
