29 Jan Woman Is Charged $3.80 For $1,825.20 Worth Of Items At Walmart
Walmart may be known for its low prices and marked down items, but under no circumstances has a laptop from the retail giant ever cost less than a cup of coffee. Recently, a woman at a Florida Walmart attempted to purchase $1,825.20 worth of electronics for just $3.80.
The electronics, which did include a laptop as well as video game controllers and other items, had been taken to a self-checkout machine in the store by 25-year-old Cheyenne Amber West.
She and her mother had been shopping at the retail giant, when they decided to replace the barcodes on their items for purchase with stickers from the clearance area. They then proceeded to the self-checkout line in hopes of not having anyone notice that their items did not match the stickers.
The pair had managed to scan all of their items through the machine and were about to pay just $3.80 when a security guard spotted them. Walmart staff added up the real cost of their purchase and it ended up being $1,825.20. That would have been a discount of nearly 99%!
Walmart staff called local authorities, and West was charged with felony grand theft shoplifting. Her mother was not charged.
In her defense, West reportedly told police, “I am just trying to get gifts for my son that I cannot afford.” She then added, “The computer is for my husband. Since he just got me a Coach purse, I figured he deserved something nice as well.”
Despite attempting to dodge the $1825 price tag of her items, West was able to pay her $3000 bail bond. West is due to appear in court in December.
Walmart is no stranger to dealing with shoplifters. The retail giant has locations that catch two to three thefts a day! According to a loss protection supervisor, who formerly worked for the company, there are three main types of shoplifters.
The first type involves those who commit petty theft. The items are small and cheap. The unnamed supervisor revealed that most of these items are at-home pregnancy tests that are stolen and used in the store’s public washroom before being disposed. The thieves usually go for the most expensive brand.
Next are serial thieves who steal to bring their items back to the returns counter for cash. Most of the items taken are small and expensive, such as printer cartridges and hand tools.
Lastly are those who belong to theft rings. They make a habit of stealing anything and everything, and they do it almost every day. It becomes their job and most resell their items to other locations, such as convenience stores.
The supervisor reveals that one such ring involved a group of senior citizens who all lived in close profanity to one another. One person would steal an item, and another would return it for cash.
West is just another name on a long list of those who have been caught shoplifting. Her mother, who was not charged said she was aware of what her daughter was doing. She told a local deputy, “Yes, I know what my daughter was doing but I never walked out with anything, and she is just trying to get gifts for her son.”
Looks like it was just another day at Walmart. Security cameras are there for a reason, and with all the experience that the retail giant has in theft prevention, chances are, if you try to steal something, you’re going to get caught.
Theft is so bad in the store, this woman almost had her DAUGHTER stolen…
