25 Sep Woman Finds Starving Five-Year-Old Child Locked In Closet And Doesn’t Let The Parents Get Away With It
There are few things worse than subjecting an impressionable and vulnerable child to years of abuse, whether that be physical or emotional. Such treatment is likely to stick with the child forever in the form of a traumatic memory. And unfortunately, attempting to reverse the devastating effects of a traumatic experience as an adult is an uphill battle in itself.
The sad fact is cases of child abuse and neglect are all too common. In fact, just this month, police rescued a five-year-old girl who was intentionally locked inside a cramped closet in a home in Randolph County, North Carolina.
Tracy Harrell, owner of the Randleman Enrichment Center, a daycare center in Randleman, North Carolina, accompanied the police officers who were supposed to conduct a welfare check on the girl. It was thought that the girl may have attended the daycare center.
When Harrel and the police arrived arrive at the house, the home appeared to be vacant. However, they soon realized it was anything but empty when then they heard a little girl’s voice coming from inside. She was screaming for help.
The police officers called her name and the girl responded again. As the front door was locked, Harrel entered the property through a window on the front porch. When Harrel was inside, she was very unsettled by what she saw before her. The little girl had been intentionally left in a closet.
“Her feet were black, her little hands were shaky. She had bit all her nails down until they were bleeding. Hair was shaved, what wasn’t had been pulled out so she had bald spots all over her head. Her face was dirty and cut up and she had bruises around her neck,”
Straight away, the daycare owner recognized the child from her daycare center.
“Little blonde curls and the big blue eyes. There was never a day when she left and she wouldn’t say, ‘I love you Miss Tracy.’ She clung to me and wrapped her arms around me. I had her laying here and she kept saying ‘please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me.’”
It was evident that the five-year-old had been left to starve, however, it wasn’t immediately clear just how long she had been left there. What made the girl’s plight all the more heartbreaking was that she was covered in burns and bruises.
“I said did you eat breakfast this morning? And she said, ‘no’. I said did you eat dinner last night? and she said, ‘no’. I said when is the last time you ate and she said, ‘I don’t remember.’”
According to police reports, the child had full access to rat poison while she was in the closet. Luckily, however, she didn’t try to consume it.
“I hope that she gets put into a loving home and gets to be a normal little girl, not having to worry about when her next meal is coming or when a beating is going to happen or when her next burn is going to happen. Just hope she doesn’t have to know this fear ever again.”
It is wholly inconceivable to me that anyone would willingly subject a child to harm and neglect, especially his or her own parents.
When the girl’s father, Adam Byrd, and his partner, Crystal Carnahan, were tracked down, they were charged with abuse, neglect, and assault with a weapon. The child is now waiting for a new home at the Department of Social Services. After all she has been through, I really hope she will finally have a shot at the childhood that was robbed from her.
