Why Does This Guy Bizarrely Have 33 Horns On His Back?

In this modern world, there is an abundance of bizarre health hacks, which often come with an alarmingly high price tag. With the rise of Instagram, there has been a surge in peculiar treatments which claim to restore, rejuvenate and revive your body.

From Kim Kardashian’s ‘vampire facelift’ to Gwyneth Paltrow’s snake venom botox, there is nothing the rich and famous won’t try in the name of beauty (and vanity).

After all, how could we forget the 2016 Rio Olympics, when a glistening Michael Phelps emerged from the pool with multiple, perfectly round, bruises on his shoulders and back. Soon, athletes across all disciplines were sporting the sinister circles. Naturally, the world was intrigued to discovery the reason behind the dark discs.

The round rings were attributed to cupping therapy, a form of alternative medicine which uses suction on the skin to help treat pain, deep scar tissue, muscle knots and swelling. Whilst there is no evidence to support that the practice has any health benefits, many sports stars indulge in it before major events.

But, now, cupping therapy has been taken to new extremes by Indonesian street healers who are using buffalo horns to create the suction. The alternative method is certainly eye catching, but is it any more beneficial than standard cupping practices?

Cupping may have become particularly prevalent in the West in recent times, but, it has been practiced in Asia and Africa for centuries. In fact, the origins of cupping date back to 1,550 BC where literature states that the ancient Egyptians had a particular taste for it.

Those who undergo the “therapy” in the West, are accustomed to having glass spheres attached to the body to create the vacuum effect. However, when the therapy initially began, it required hollowed out animal horns. This then was adapted to bamboo cups, and now glass.
