Why 13 Reasons Why Shouldn’t Come Back For a Second Season

When it was first announced in May that 13 Reasons Why had been renewed, thousands of fans across the world rejoiced. The harrowing Netflix original, which saw high school student Hannah Baker leaves 13 tapes for the 13 people she believed pushed her towards suicide, had tugged at the heartstrings of many viewers. Well, sorry to rain on their parade, but I’m here to tell you why the show shouldn’t be brought back.

First of all, I must make it clear that it’s certainly not because I didn’t like the show. In fact, I loved it. The powerful Netflix original’s brilliant concept and dazzling execution – not forgetting the astounding acting from the young cast – opened its audience’s eyes to something that happens on a daily basis in the real world, and something that was difficult to watch, yet needed to be seen. Was the show wonderful? Absolutely. Should it have a second season? Absolutely not.

1. Let’s not put Hannah through any more pain

Series creator, Brian Yorkey has confirmed that Katherine Langford will return to the second series in the role of Hannah Baker, saying: “Hannah’s story is still very much not finished. She’s an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is.” Learning more about Hannah’s life will certainly be interesting, but is it necessary? Hannah told us the 13 reasons why she feels like she was pushed to suicide, let’s leave her to rest in peace now.

2. The myth of closure

Life is messy and most of the time, no matter what you do, your loose ends will never all be tied up. Ending 13 Reasons Why with the tapes mirrors life in all its imperfect confusion.

3. Would an ending give us what we want? Should it?

Do people just want a second season so things can be wrapped up in the way they think is right? Alex living on? Hannah’s parents winning their lawsuit? Bryce getting sent to prison? All of the characters learning their lesson and walking off into the sunset? Judging on its first season, the show isn’t afraid to not give the viewers what they want; it could well end up with the rapist walking free, simply because that’s often what happens in reality.

4. Some things are more powerful left alone

The reason everyone couldn’t stop talking about 13 Reasons Why was the fact that it was so damn good. By making another season, the creators risk besmirching their legacy. Maybe the story was so perfect because we only had 13 episodes.
