It’s no secret that our furry friends can get themselves into trouble. I’ll never forget the time that my pet rabbit wandered into the overgrown farm behind my house. My heart sank when I saw his little white face among the overgrown nettles, but I didn’t think twice about getting stung to save him. Luckily, he realized that he’d gotten himself into a bit of a sticky situation and happily let me scoop him up to safety.

Dogs, in particular, have a real habit of getting into dangerous situations, and unlike cats, they certainly don’t have nine lives. But one dog who is an exception to this rule is Mel the Shih Tzu from Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paolo. She had an unbelievable brush with death when she wandered over her owner’s balcony and fell almost 100ft to what should have been her death – and the whole incident was captured on CCTV.

While entering the apartment complex that Mel lived in, Joao Augusto noticed that the pooch was about to fall from the balcony, and not wanting to stand by and watch his neighbor’s beloved pooch have a such a dramatic and painful death, he immediately intervened.

He shouted for a caretaker to get him a sheet to increase his chances of catching her, “but there wasn’t enough time”, the Daily Mail reported.

“Then, she fell from the ninth floor. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to catch her, but I was aware that I could cushion the fall,” Augusto said.

Recalling the aftermath of the dramatic incident, which no doubt left Mel’s heart racing, Augusto said: “I was on the floor for a few seconds but it was from relief. I think that I was in the right place at the right time. I did the most I could to help. It was a happy ending.”

Mel’s owner, who has requested not to be identified, has now installed mesh netting on their balcony to prevent a similar incident from occurring again. But, most importantly, Mel was completely unharmed as a result of the incident.

One thing’s for sure – this is one pooch who won’t be testing out if she’s got more than one life again in the future!
