04 May Utah Man In Handcuffs Flees Courtroom Before Nosediving Off Second-Floor Balcony

Although I’ve never been in the situation myself, I can only imagine how daunting it must be to be a defendant in a court case centering on a crime you committed. The very idea that you’ll have to pay for what you did by having your freedom taken away from you is a terrifying feeling.

If you end up in prison, you could potentially be forced to share a cell with someone who is capable of unspeakable things and will have to accept the fact that while you’re locked up, you have to live at the mercy of the other prisoners and prison guards.

But as they say: if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime. One man from Utah clearly wasn’t prepared to do the time for his crimes, and it didn’t work out too well for him.

Security footage from a Utah courthouse shows the man in handcuffs running out of his own court case, before dramatically diving off a second-floor balcony:

In the short clip, which was released on May 2, 2018, Christopher Clay Rudd slams onto the ground after what seems to have been a particularly nasty fall.

According to reports, 35-year-old Rudd was arrested by Mapleton police on allegations of theft, possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of drugs. He was in the Spanish Fork court, on Monday, because he failed to attend court-ordered rehab.

A bailiff could be seen trying to catch him before he nosedived off the balcony, just outside the courtroom. The security guards on the ground floor frantically rushed to catch the man but failed as Rudd hit the ground hard and fast.

The men then decided to hold him down in an attempt to stop him escaping the building but soon enough it becomes evident that the fall had badly injured him. There were splatters of blood across his face and later it emerged that he had broken his leg and pelvis and fractured his skull.

Fox 6 News reports that he was waiting to explain to the judge why he had failed to attend these rehab sessions before deciding to flee law enforcement.

It isn’t clear whether or not Rudd was intentionally trying to injure himself, law enforcement spokesman Matt Johnson revealed. However, he could be facing additional charges for attempting to escape.
