11 Jul US Says It Will Engage Military Force ‘If We Must’ After North Korea’s Recent Missile Test
Tensions on the Korean peninsula continue to escalate. The already strained relations between the United States and North Korea – if the incessant enmity and provocation even constitutes a relationship at this point – took yet another turn for the worse in recent weeks, after the untimely, tragic death of American student Otto Warmbier.
2017 has been characterised by bombastic, militarised rhetoric that many have feared will escalate into devastating war between the two countries. Propaganda videos have emanated from the North with regularity, along with continued missile tests that fly in the face of warnings from several countries and international bodies.
Pyongyang has displayed a certain disdain for its American counterparts, its defiance defined by vast military parades and provocative statements that would seem to suggest a distinct lack of fear over the possibility of conflict with the world’s most potent nuclear force.
Despite sanctions that have been placed on North Korea in the past, it has wilfully continued a missile testing programme that has seen some high profile failures as well as occasional successes. It would appear that their most recent test, conducted this week, was a success. The United States of America, though, will view it as a further provocation.
