Uber CEO, Travis Kalanick, Has Resigned

Travis Kalanick, the CEO of the company Uber, has resigned. Kalanick, who had taken leave of absence last week after his mother’s death, has decided to step away from his post within the company completely. The shock resignation comes at a time of continued scandals and controversy for the company, who have had to deal with allegations of sexual harassment in the workplace, as well as a lawsuit from the self-driving car company Waymo.

Uber, who released a statement on their website regarding the resignation, have said that Kalanick will keep his place on the board of the company:

“This is a bold decision and a sign of his devotion and love for Uber. By stepping away, he’s taking the time to heal from his personal tragedy while giving the company room to fully embrace this new chapter in Uber’s history. We look forward to continuing to serve with him on the board.”

Things haven’t been plain sailing for Kalanick in recent months, and many people believe the resignation has come off the back of the mounting pressure on his shoulders rather than his mother’s death. Reports of a hostile workplace, including allegations of sexual harassment have put the pressure on the company’s leadership.

Earlier this year, a blog post by former Uber employee, Susan Fowler (above), went viral. The post, titled “Reflecting On One Very, Very Strange Year At Uber” outlines the sexual harassment Fowler received while at the company, and accuses the management team of simply sweeping it under the carpet.
