Coming out as gay in high school is rarely an easy task, but having a support group can help make it a bit easier. Unfortunately, Michael and Zach Zakar didn’t know that they had someone supportive to lean on until a somewhat strange series of events took place. The 24-year-old Iraqi-American twins are both models and are both gay, a fact they did not find out about one another until one day during their junior year in high school.

As models and LGBT advocates, the Zakar twins have garnered a strong social media following, including a popular Instagram account and YouTube channel. Their latest YouTube video details the unfolding of events that led to them coming out to one another, a story that is almost hard to believe. The year was 2011, and both twins had yet to come out to anyone.

Zach, a popular rugby player, had fallen ill with the stomach flu, and was resting at home for a few days. While he was gone, his twin brother Michael, was walking down the hall one day when another student, apparently a Pete Wentz look-alike, approached him. “I was minding my own business,” says Michael, “and one of Zach’s distant friends came up to me… and he was like, ‘hey, want to make out in the bathroom?’”
