Transgender Comedian Slams Donald Trump’s Military Ban On ‘The Tonight Show’

Donald Trump made his stance on LGBTQ rights apparent on Wednesday when he announced that he plans to reinstate a ban on transgender individuals serving “in any capacity” in the US military.

This puts in him in antithesis to his predecessor Barack Obama who was committed to furthering the rights of the marginalised community. In his final term, Obama’s policy to allow transgender people to serve transparently in the armed forces was approved by the Defence Department.

However, the transgender community were already made to feel uneasy about their future under President Trump last month when Defence Secretary James Mattis stated that he was postponing enacting Obama’s historic policy. Trump took to his favourite social media platform Twitter to vocalise his intentions:

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military,” Trump said in a series of tweets Wednesday morning. “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
We can rest assured, however, that the trans community along with their allies are not taking this violation of human rights sitting down. Indeed, transgender comedian Patti Harrison issued an epic takedown of Trump’s proposal on The Tonight Show.
