This Optical Illusion Can Determine Whether Or Not You Need To Wear Glasses

It used to be the case that glasses were only for so-called nerds, but that’s not the case anymore. Thanks to the likes of A-list bespectacled celebrities like Ryan Gosling, Tom Hiddleston, Zoe Deschanel, and Robin Wright, having “four eyes” is officially cooler than two.

So, how do you know if you can rock the glasses look for yourself? Well, aside from just wearing frames without lenses, it is generally required that you go to an optometrist to get your vision tested. That usually happens to most of us in our school years, when the teacher notices us squinting a lot.

Of course, plenty of us go through vision changes later in life, too, and only require corrective lenses at that point. So, if you’ve managed to make it through grade school without glasses, but are starting to notice things getting a little fuzzy, then maybe this test is for you.

Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have come up with one image, which is an optical illusion that can determine whether or not you need glasses. Of course, you’ll still need to make an official appointment with an eye doctor to get an exact prescription, but this is a good place to start.

The image is similar to 2015’s viral meme known simply as “The Dress”, which was also an optical illusion that had people arguing over whether a dress in a photo was black and blue or white and gold. I was firmly in the while and gold camp, despite the dress truly being black and blue.

In that case, scientists believe the difference in opinion of the color of the dress has to do with how individuals perceive color and how the brain calculates chromatic adaptation, which is the ability to adjust to differences in illumination in order to maintain the appearance of object colors.

Or in other words, it’s the way we see objects as stable, unchanging things despite the changes in illumination and light reflecting off them and into our eyes. An orange always appears, well, orange, regardless of whether we look at it in daylight or at night.

But how do you know what glasses suit your face? Check out the video below for help on this: [[jwplayerwidget||http://content.jwplatform.com/videos/DGgzMAdj-Q0L14jDU.mp4||DGgzMAdj]]

That being said, regardless of what color you thought the dress was, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your eyes, but depending on what you see in the image from MIT, you may need to make an appointment with your eye doctor.

The image, which is below, depicts a famous person, or rather it depicts two famous people, but depending on which one you see could mean you aren’t seeing the whole picture. Have a look, from about a foot away, at who you think is pictured below:

Got it? Good. So, if you see Albert Einstein then congratulations, you have good vision! However, if you see Marilyn Monroe, then you most likely need to wear glasses. Essentially how this works is that the more detail your eyes are able to see the more likely it is that you can see Albert Einstein.

ASAP Science explained it this way: “Depending on how well you’re able to focus or pick up contrast, your eye will only pick out details. Up close, we’re generally able to pick up fine details like Einstein’s mustache and wrinkles.

“But as the distance increases, or if your vision is poor and creates a more blurred image in the first place, your ability to pick up details fades away.” Make sense? So, for all you Marilyn Monroes out there, I think it’s time to book that eye exam.
