29 Jun This Korean Girl Has Been Trapped inside Her House on Webcam for 14 Years
This is Chip-Chan, a young South Korean woman whose identity has never been discovered. At first glance she appears shy, docile, lethargic – another member of Asia’s increasingly agoraphobic population who voluntarily shun social contact in favour of cyberspace.
Yet look beyond the surface, dig just a little deeper, and you’ll discover a complex network of speculation and conspiracy, a community devoted to discovering the truth, and the tragic story of a young girl caught between human extortion and mental sickness. Chip-Chan is one of the most enigmatic mysteries on the internet.
Chip-Chan was first ‘discovered’ in 2009. The original discoverer had been searching through open source webcams, and stumbled upon live footage of a woman lying in the corner of a room in a very uncomfortable position. Disturbed, the original poster shared a link to the cam on a forum, believing the girl to be dead.
4chan viewers observed the live feed for some time, and managed to piece together clues from objects and innocuous details in the room. Although Chip-Chan’s identity is still unknown, the thread managed to establish that she was living in South Korea, had posted numerous signs and messages throughout the room and – after she woke up – that she wasn’t dead at all.
She didn’t do much; mostly the feed involved Chip-Chan sleeping for long periods of time (for as long as 18 hours in one instance) and browsing on her laptop. She would occasionally leave her home (in which she was the only occupant) for 15 to 20 mins to buy groceries, but apart from that, she was utterly isolated.
Periodically the cameras would shut themselves off for an hour or so, and viewers began sharing the stream, and attempting to translate Chip-Chan’s Korean messages. When they did, they learned that the anonymous girl was potentially a victim of a plot more bizarre and disturbing than anything found in the movies.
