Animal welfare has become a familiar concept in today’s world.

Though shocking acts of animal cruelty do still occur – sometimes on a large scale – it would be fair to say that our society is far more enlightened and aware of such behaviour than previous generations.

Some might consider the plight of animals a secondary concern, but there is surely no reason for the extended suffering of the creatures with which we share planet Earth, particularly at the hands of humans.

One feels sure that some practices used in meat production and similar enterprises at the present time will be looked back upon with a shudder and no small amount of regret, frankly the way some animals are treated in the name of human consumption is a travesty.

On a smaller scale, though, animal abuse is just as sinister. If you have ever witnessed a pet being beaten by its owner, you will be familiar with the sickening feeling of injustice and sadness for the poor animal who is subject to needless cruelty.

Perhaps part of the problem is the lack of meaningful punishment for those who engage in such depravity. Indeed, new figures from animal welfare charity the RSPCA certainly appear to make that case.
