23 Jun This Is the Reason Why the Tube Gets so Hot and What Is Being Done to Help It
Heatwaves are a difficult thing to contend with. On the one hand, you want to enjoy the summer heat and make the most of the ability to venture outside without the need for umbrellas, coats, or layers of any kind. But it definitely gets to the point where the heat is far too unbearable to achieve any enjoyment at all.
That’s a dilemma faced by many Londoners this month, as the June heat sends the temperature through the roof, while the country itself has to get by without widespread use of air conditioning. But the worst thing Brits have to deal with during this heatwave is transport.
The London Underground packs in hundreds of citizens onto crowded trains where the air is in short supply and sweat reigns. According to Transport for London, the Central Line reached up to 34.8°C (94.6°F) a couple of years ago.
To put things in perspective, the UK rules that the temperature for the transportation of cattle has to stay between 5°C and 30°C. So what’s the deal with the extreme heat on the tube, and what can be done about it?
