For better or for worse, we all remember our first loves. My first came when I was around five years old, and involved a gift for my beloved at her birthday party; a bathroom ornament wrapped, for some reason, in fabric and sellotape. My mum intervened before I could leave the house with it, but to this day, I still wonder what would have happened if I’d been left to my own devices that day. I think that we would probably be married.

More often than not, those stories of preschool love are less the opening chapter to a timeless love story, and more an embarrassing anecdote your mother trots out every time you bring somebody new home to meet your parents. That’s not the case, however, when it comes to Laura Scheel and Matt Grodsky. One of Matt’s earliest memories was standing up in pre-school to declare his love for Laura, and 20 years later, it’s become clear that three-year-old Matt was in no way messing around.
