The Pivotal Scene That Transformed Margot Robbie From A Soap Opera Star To A Hollywood Icon

The beautiful and talented actress Margot Robbie has been a household name for quite some time now. She secured her spot in the limelight following the release of 2013’s The Wolf Of Wall Street, and thanks to huge roles in movies like Suicide Squad and I, Tonya, her success seems far from waning anytime soon.

If you’re vaguely aware of the actress’ career, you may know that it started off on the popular Australian soap opera, Neighbours. Since then, the talented actress has gone on to work alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith.

Being the ambitious woman that she is, Margot even launched her own production company. Oh and not to mention the Oscar nomination she received for her lead role in the unexpectedly breathtaking biopic I, Tonya.

The Focus actress is undeniably one of the most successful imports from Australia in Hollywood right now. And that’s primarily because Margot really knows how to transform herself for a role, like any world-class actor should.

And talking about her onscreen roles, it’s pretty evident to anyone who follows her career that she is very particular about the characters she portrays. They’re all unique and represent a whole spectrum of women as opposed to just the same two-dimensional characters.

Margot is also known for keeping it real offscreen too. Even in situations where she’s expected to uphold a bubbly and camera-friendly exterior.

Remember when she gave Kate Winslet the side-eye while she gushed over Woodie Allen:

Yep, Margot is a pretty all-round fantastic human being and deserves every bit of recognition for it.

Now, the blond beauty recently turned 28 and in honor of her birthday, we’ve decided to break down exactly what it is that makes her onscreen roles the ultimate celebration of strong and complex women.

But first, we’ll delve into where it all started.

Margot was born and raised in Dalby, a small town in rural Queensland, Australia. Her family worked on the farmland which surrounded her home, but Margot wasn’t really feeling a job in the countryside and was instead intent on becoming a magician.

When Margot was a kid, the self-confessed Harry Potter nerd believed a career in showbusiness was only a viable option for people who grew up in Hollywood, a world that she was far away from.

But alas, she did indeed become a bona fide member of the elite world of film.

Before that though, Margot’s not-quite-so-big break came as the plucky Donna Freedman on Neighbours. She landed the role at the age of just 17 following her persistence with the producers of the show.

Before long, Margot became a huge presence in the daytime soap, starring in a total of 311 episodes.

Her most memorable storyline really highlighted the need for representation of LGBTQ+ people. When Margot’s character, Donna, kissed the newest resident of Ramsay Street, a girl called Sunny (played by Hany Lee Choi), bigots up and down the country were outraged.

Margot responded to the bigoted backlash, by telling the Herald:

“It’s really not a big deal at all. It’s not an actual gay storyline, it’s just kind of an impulsive peck. It’s just like another day on set really. I have to kiss other characters all the time and usually, that’s real kissing.”

It was later on in her career that Margot would come to learn the importance of realistic portrayals of all kinds of different women.

Similarly to Donna, Margot’s aspirations, hopes, and dreams went far beyond Ramsay Street. She decided to follow in the footsteps of all the people who had made it in the film industry, moving away from her home country in the process.

Ten years later, Margot is in her late twenties and absolutely killing it as an actor with the ability to authentically portray a range of different human emotions.

In 2013, after an impressive audition which involved slapping Leonardo DiCaprio in the face, Martin Scorsese cast Robbie as Naomi Lapaglia in the blockbuster The Wolf Of Wall Street.

Naomi was the “love interest” of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jordan Belfort.

Margot’s character was loosely based on Brooklyn-born Nadine Macaluso and following the film’s success, fans were impressed by how one woman from down under was able to nail the accent so effortlessly.

The part she played in the movie was so much more than just a female role which served as a buffer in the male-centric world of stock markets.

The talented actress played the character with wit, charm, and grace. Her confidence, as well as her radiant beauty, truly lit up the big screen and left a long-lasting impression on movie-goers.

But if you’re thinking the praise she received from the critics may have gone to her head a little, well, it is often said that she doesn’t bring any ego on set.

The woman, who was nicknamed Maggot by her family, is certainly no diva. She has a humility about her which will only serve her as her career continues to go from strength to strength.

Margot’s next big silver screen role was in an indie film called Z For Zacharia. The movie was set in a post-apocalyptic world and engaged in an in-depth exploration of human relationships under very challenging circumstances.

If you haven’t yet seen it, here’s a trailer of the poignant film:

Moving on – who could forget her cameo in The Big Short? In a very self-deprecatingly comedic bathtub scene, she “played” herself explaining mortgage bonds.

Then there was the highly-anticipated Suicide Squad, released back in 2016. Hers was a standout performance even if the movie, as a whole, didn’t quite live up to the expectations of its audience.

I, Tonya, a biopic which centers on Tonya Harding, a disgraced former figure skater, provided Margot with her next big, exciting role. In addition, Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerly, both produced the Oscar-nominated movie.

The film focused on many upsetting themes, such as abuse, prejudice, and the media’s tendency to pit women against each other.

Again this role showed just how versatile this incredibly talented woman is. We could truly spend all day dissecting Margot’s various roles and praising her for her captivating portrayals…

Considering the huge success and praise Robbie has deservedly received over her eleven-year career, it’s hard to believe that she’s still only just turned 28. Robbie clearly has a long and illustrious career ahead of her, and we’ll patiently wait for the day that this Aussie queen bags herself a well-deserved Oscar.
