As I get older, it’s getting harder to keep up with society’s current trends, but I like to think I’m down with the kids. I use Instagram to take pictures of trees and food, I have Snapchat both installed and open regularly on my phone, and I have used the phrase “on fleek” in what I’m hoping was the correct fashion without a dose of irony. However, even a hip person like myself can be baffled by some of the developments that have occurred, especially when it relates to things I enjoyed not too long ago.

While I never had a Ken doll of my own, the aesthetic of Barbie’s literal boy toy is burned into the minds of many a 90s kid like myself; the perfectly-styled hair, the trendy clothing, not to mention the chiselled, creepily smooth body. Of course, Mattel, the company behind the line of dolls, will be keen to market the toys to newer generations, and to that end, they’ve given the Ken doll a 21st-century upgrade, complete with man bun and dad bod. Fair to say, the new Ken doll has caused quite the buzz online.
