The Heartbreaking Reason Why This Woman Took A Photograph Of Herself Every Day For A Year

Domestic violence is a plague in modern society. To put the scale of the problem into context, between 2001 and 2012, 6,488 American troops lost their lives fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq and, horrifyingly, 11,766 lost their lives as a result of domestic violence.

People of any gender can be subject to domestic violence, although it is typically women who suffer from it. To people on the outside of abusive relationships, leaving seems like a simple solution, but the reality is that domestic violence is incredibly difficult to escape from.

In the United States, 82% of victims of domestic violence are women and 18% are men.

This statistic is arguably reflected in the number of women who have recently come forward to admit that they have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of big-name celebrities in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

In an attempt to shed light on the problem, a woman suffering from domestic violence took a picture of herself every day for a year.

These heartbreaking selfies were taken throughout 2012, and they reveal the physical effect of a form of abuse that can also be psychological. The photographs are shocking, and what makes them even more difficult to look at is that they get progressively worse throughout the year.
