Porn and sex education have become synonymous. However, what is categorized as mainstream adult material is growing further and further away from the reality of a normal heterosexual relationship, with pornstars being subjected to increasingly degrading treatment.

Now, following the deaths of four sex porn stars in the past three months, people are questioning what led to their untimely ends.

The most recent casualty of the porn industry was 20-year-old Olivia Nova, who died just three days ago in early January.

Although the exact circumstances of her death are still unknown, it has been reported by her friends that she was planning to turn her life around after doctors warned her that her reliance on narcotics was unsustainable in October.

Nova’ suicide came just weeks after the less publicised death of 31-year-old Yuri Beltran, who died of an overdose on December 13.

However, the first porn star whose death which truly caught the media’s attention was 23-year-old August Ames, who committed suicide on December 5.

Prior to taking her life, she spoke about her battles with depression and bipolar disorder, but the tipping point came when she was subject to online abuse after warning another performer not to sleep with a crossover actor out of fear that it could lead to her contracting an STI.

Shyla Styles also died in November at the age of 35, although the cause of her death remains unknown. She was found unconscious in her bed.

Steve McKeown, a psychoanalyst, founder of MindFixers and owner of The McKeown Clinic, said:

“Nearly 90 per cent of women in the sex industry said they wanted to escape, but had no other means for survival and also experienced post traumatic stress disorder at rates of nearly 70 per cent equivalent to veterans of combat war.”

The tragic circumstances surrounding these women’s untimely deaths has caused many to call for a greater awareness about how sex work can affect a person’s mental health and for people to stop and think about the kind of adult material they are watching.
