January is known to be a pretty depressing month. The holidays are over, it’s cold and the skies are usually grey. In fact, this month, even the moon is “blue”!

On Wednesday, we will be experiencing an extremely rare event called a super blood blue moon. That doesn’t sound very depressing, does it? The whole thing actually sounds pretty cool and hasn’t happened for 150 years! So it’s not something you’ll want to miss.

To be honest, the “blue” part isn’t really that interesting. A blue moon refers to the occurrence of two full moons in one calendar month. We previously had a full moon on January 2. On its own, it’s rare but not that rare. Though it is where we get the expression “once in a blue moon”.

At the same time, we will be experiencing a supermoon, which is where the moon is at its closest point to the Earth. This makes it look really big, about 14% brighter than usual, and it will have some stronger effects on the tides. On top of all that, it is also a lunar eclipse!
