When it comes to sex, nothing is more important than protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases and accidental pregnancy. Whilst birth control might allow you to avoid the latter, the only way of ensuring that there’s no risk of contracting an STI is by using a condom.

It is only when couples agree to be in a committed relationship that condoms are foregone, and this is usually done after they are both safe in the knowledge that neither party has an STI. But some monogamous couples couples still chose to use condoms to double up on their protection against pregnancy.

Unfortunately, some schools do not adequately teach sex education. When I was still in high school, LGBTQ+ sex was never mentioned, and because I went to a religious school, condoms were out of the question as well. To put it bluntly, I was clueless.

My sex education came primarily from my peers, and, generally speaking, school kids still have a long way to go when it comes to teaching each other everything they need to know about sex (some people literally thought you could get pregnant from oral sex).

But it’s so more than just condoms too, as issues like consent also need to be strongly discussed.
