31 Aug Teenage Girl Posts Heartbreaking Final Messages Before She’s Swept Away By Texas Floods
Hurricane Harvey has torn through southeast Texas, forcing families to flee to safety as their homes are submerged in floodwater. The storm has already left 30,000 people seeking refuge after losing everything to the floods.
The tropical cyclone has so far claimed an estimated 30 lives, but, that number is thought to rise. Haunting tales of narrow escapes are becoming an hourly occurrence, but, tragically many of the stories don’t have a happy ending.
The story of the Saldivar family is one of the most harrowing to emerge from the Category 4 cyclone. The family, from Houston, had their worst nightmares come true when the hurricane began to consume their home. This terror was documented by 16-year-old Devy Saldivar, who took to social media to voice her fears for her life.
As Hurricane Harvey formed and Texas braced itself for impact, Devy tweeted: “Don’t want to sleep but I’m so tired.” The schoolgirl was haunted by the idea that Harvey was fast approaching and used Twitter as a platform to express her anxiety. “[No] sleep & anxiety, please let this pass sooner”, she tweeted on August 27 at 5:30am. She then used Facebook to share a message which asked people to, “pray for Houston”.
Anxious, the young teen kept updating Twitter to comfort herself. On August 26, Devy saved a pair of kittens that she had discovered under her car. She shared a picture of the tiny creatures cuddling in a picnic basket, using a sad face in the caption to emphasise her worry.
As the hurricane began to gain serious momentum, Devy’s Twitter timeline became a stream of continuous messages of support from her friends, “I love you too, be safe” one writes.
Despite her terror, Devy used her account to also share sinisterly comical messages. On August 26, she shared the song ‘Riders Of The Storm’ by The Doors, which she captioned: “I found this funny how it played randomly.” However, just one day later her messages become darker.
