Teen Double Amputee Races Again Just 11 Weeks After Losing Both Lower Legs In Horrific Crash

Motor racing has long been a dangerous pursuit. Flying around specially designed tracks intended to challenge the drivers who ride them at dizzying speeds was never going to be considered particularly “safe”.

With that said, fatalities in arguably the most widely known motor racing sport, Formula 1, have been relatively low, particularly in recent years. The most high profile fatality in Formula 1 in recent years is undoubtedly the tragic death of Jules Bianchi, who lost his life after a horrific accident on the Suzuka Circuit during the Japanese Grand Prix in 2014.

It was reported at the time that Bianchi was travelling at roughly 132 mph when he lost control of his car in wet racing conditions and crashed into a nearby safety truck. Of course, no sport is without its risks, though Formula 1, with its exposed cockpits and daredevil driving feats at startling speeds, can at times make for tense viewing, particularly in light of Bianchi’s untimely passing.

Though not in Formula 1, sad news of another racing crash has emerged in recent days. Billy Monger, who is from Surrey, UK, suffered a serious high speed crash at Donnington Park. As a result, Monger has lost both of his lower legs, the BBC reports. Now though, he is back behind the wheel.
