30 Jun Teachers Reveal the Stupidest Questions They Were Ever Asked by Students
When you’re a kid in school, teachers always say to you “now there’s no such thing as a stupid question, so if you don’t know something then just ask.” It’s a kind thing to say and well-intentioned. It’s meant to encourage you to cultivate a natural sense of curiosity and hunger for knowledge, and make sure you don’t make unverified assumptions. But I think we all know that stupid questions definitely do exist. In fact, nobody knows this axiom better than educators, who have to endure all kinds of queries from students on an almost daily basis. I guess that ignorance really is that pervasive.
Now, it would be cruel for a teacher to openly laugh at a student who asked something particularly daft – but that doesn’t mean that they don’t discuss it in private, either at home, in the staff room, or online. Check out these bizarre, preposterous and downright eye roll-inducing questions below. By the end of this list, you’ll never put your hand up in class again.
1. This one is just mind-boggling
“‘How old was the average 18 year old in 1942?’ He then managed to forget he was wearing his own glasses and asked everybody where they were.”
2. Punctuation errors
“Private writing instructor. A couple of years ago, I had a student ask me if commas were real or imaginary. He was equally dubious about semicolons, which he referred to as ‘imitation periods.’ (Since people have asked, he was 26 and very serious. Edited for clarity.)”
3. Someone wasn’t paying attention in English class
“In 9th grade English literature, a few chapters into Of Mice And Men, I had the following exchange: ‘what kind of work does George do on the farm?’ they asked. ‘I’m not sure. Probably the same work that everyone else is doing,’ I replied. ‘Oh,’ they said, ‘It must be hard for him to help out, since he’s a mouse.’”
4. Someone needs to watch Apollo 13
“‘I once projected a picture of the Earth onto the front white board. A student asked, ‘how do astronauts stand on a planet like that?’ This was an 8th grade student, being totally serious, not under any noticeable influence of illegal substances.”
