Steven Avery’s Lawyer Makes New Claim That Could Blow the Case Wide Open

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend watching the Netflix documentary Making a Murderer. Premiering in late 2015, this 10-part series followed the life of Steven Avery over 10 years, including his exoneration in 2003 over a wrongful conviction of attempted murder and sexual assault, as well as a murder conviction in 2007. Born in Manitowoc County in Wisconsin, Avery served 18 years in prison (from 1985 to 2003) for a crime he did not commit, and his exoneration prompted discussion of Wisconsin’s criminal justice system.

At the moment, Steven Avery is serving a life sentence for the murder of freelance photographer Teresa Halbach, who disappeared on October 31, 2005. At the time of his arrest, Avery claimed he had been framed in order to discredit his wrongful conviction civil case, filed after his release, and now, Steven Avery’s lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, has submitted a 1,272-page document that suggests a new suspect in the murder of Teresa Hallbach.
