Someone Bought an Old Film Camera and Discovered Amazing Lost Photos

Have you ever unexpectedly stumbled upon something incredible? Everyone knows that good things come when you least expect them. That’s exactly what happened to photographer Kati Dimoff when she visited a charity shop. Every time she’s around the southeast Portland area, Kati stops by Goodwill to search for undeveloped rolls of film, hoping to discover some forgotten treasures lingering. In early 2017, she struck gold.

Amazingly, Kati found a treasure-trove of photos that showed the deadly 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, located in the Cascade mountain range of Washington. More than 37 years after the eruption of the volcano killed 57 people and completely shook the Pacific Northwest, we take a look at the photos that were lost for decades.

1. The historic photos were found on a vintage Argus C2 that contained
a damaged roll of Kodachrome slide film

2. After sending it off to be developed, Kati received a film back with a note on the package saying:
“is this from the Mt. St. Helens eruption?”

3. Kati is no stranger to finding historic pictures on her travels; on the first roll of undeveloped film she ever found, she discovered pictures of the Portland International Raceway from 40-50 years ago

4. Longview Bridge is in the foreground of this picture, while Mt. St. Helens begins its now-notorious eruption in the background
