28 Jun Six People Will Face Criminal Charges Over the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium Disaster

The events of April 15 1989 are burned into the memories of the British people. It’s hard to forget the horrific tragedy that took place that day, nor know how to process them as the investigation into who was to blame for the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster continued over the last 28 years.

The over-crowding during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield lead to the tragic loss of 96 Liverpool supporters, who were crushed to death in the standing-only pens, as well as the injury of 766 others. Despite the outcry from the public and the relentless campaigning of the families and friends of the victims of the event, up to now none of those responsible have been charged with any crimes.

Many believed the negligence of the police force in charge of controlling the situation was to blame for the tragedy, and condemned their subsequent statements wherein they blamed the deaths on the drinking and general hooliganism of the football fans.

Despite this, inquests into the events in 1991 and 2012 ruled that all the deaths were accidental, to which families fought for further investigation. Another coroner’s inquest was held from 2014 to 2016, reaching the conclusion that the supporters were unlawfully killed due to failures by the emergency services to fulfil their duty. Now the verdict has been confirmed, and six people have been charged with various offences.
