Almost every American has an opinion on gun controls. Now that mass shootings are becoming an everyday part of the news, many people want legislation to change, and perhaps the people we should be listening to the most are those who have experienced shootings first-hand.
In the wake of the Flordia Valentine’s Day shooting, a teacher who saved 19 students is calling for the government to act.
Because of the prevalence of mass shootings, many teachers are now receiving specialist training so that they know what to do in the event of one. Just one month before former student Nikolas Cruz opened fire on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, teachers received training about what to do in an emergency, and Melissa Falkowski put it into action to save the lives of 19 of her students.
She revealed in an interview with USA News that she knew from the timing of the incident that it was not a drill, and once she and the 19 pupils had arrived back in her classroom, decided that the best course of action would be to hide in a cupboard.
The students had not been in the classroom because Cruz had set of the school’s fire alarm to increase his ability to harm people.
Many of the pupils were naturally hysterical in the cupboard, but Melissa maintained her composure and kept them calm during the shooting.
“I didn’t sleep very well last night,” Melissa said to ABC News the morning after the shooting. “I just feel grateful that I got to go home to my family when others didn’t get that.”
