When Suicide Squad was released in August last year, it received less than favourable ratings, but overnight it spawned a Halloween sensation. On October 31, 2016, Harley Quinn and the Joker reigned supreme at every party.

So, when Steven King’s iconic horror story, IT, was adapted for the screen and released this September, it was inevitable that it would inspire the Halloween trend for 2017. The film stormed the box office, a serious achievement for such a niche genre, instantly making Pennywise the Clown this years hottest Halloween trend.

Instagram is now inundated with make-up looks inspired by the frightening flick, from the sexy to scary and ones that truly have the ability to haunt you…

Halloween this year is set to be a day dedicated to the psychotic clown, who terrorises the town of Derry every 27 years. Last seen in 1988, the haunting clown is scheduled to make a comeback, of sorts.

For those with Coulrophobia – a fear of clowns – this Halloween is sure to be even more challenging than ever before. In fact, we would suggest you lock your doors until the day is over.

Pennywise is an unlikely style icon. His eerie red makeup and sharp teeth have become the central focus for this years festivities, along with the vintage Victorian inspired costume, designed by Janie Bryant. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bryant explained the design process behind Pennywise’s sinister costume:

“There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume. The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality.”

The “doll-like quality” is certainly what Instagram make-up stars are focussing on as they craft their own versions of the terrifying look. Porcelain white skin and coarse, unkempt hair, are all consistently used on the various looks, along with an eerily cute costume to juxtapose the clowns true identity.
