Recent news in Britain has made for less than comforting reading. Recent atrocities committed in the country were shocking, crude and callous, claiming many lives and injuring dozens more. A common thread of the recent incidents, though, has been the manner in which members of the public have responded.

Far from being cowed into fear and submission, Britons have rallied around those affected with astonishing bravery and love. In the wake of the Manchester attacks, reports emerged of taxi drivers working free of charge to transport those left stranded safely home, and London followed suit in the wake of the London Bridge attack.

This morning, a different type of emergency unfolded in the capital, after a colossal fire broke out at a tower block in West London.
