29 Oct Selena Gomez Opens Up In First Interview About Secret “Life Or Death” Kidney Transplant
The need for organ donors is a pressing issue in today’s society. Having lost a childhood friend to disease when she was just 20 years old, I’ve seen first-hand how a lack of donors can cut short lives. That’s why I’ve signed up to the organ donor register.
Whilst it’s easy to assume that celebrities’ lives are always Instagram-perfect, that’s not the case. Celebrities have health problems just like you and I, and Selena Gomez recently shocked her fans by revealing that she’d had a kidney transplant earlier this year.
Prior to the transplant, Gomez had been suffering from Lupus. This is a rare auto-immune disease which affects a person’s entire body. It is caused by the body’s immune system becoming hyperactive, and it can lead to kidney failure.
Gomez opened up about her transplant on September 14, but did not give her first interview until October 27.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music,” she wrote on Instagram. “So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering.”
“It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” Gomez continued on Instagram. “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you (sic).”
“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”
