12 Jul SeaWorld Launches Investigation After Second Death In Park This Year
SeaWorld’s reputation has been all but destroyed by allegations that its animals suffer under enforced captivity. Accusations are centred on the fact that capitalising from using wild animals, such as killer whales, as circus performers is not ethically viable. The consequences of keeping killer whales captive are explored in the 2013 BAFTA award-winning documentary Blackfish, which focuses on how captivity contributed to its late orca Tilikum’s aggression. The killer whale who died this past January killed three people in the space of 20 years, two of whom were his trainers.
In 2016, as a result of declining ticket sales and pressure from activist groups, SeaWorld announced that it would be phasing out their orca shows and breeding programmes. But its days of controversy are far from over. Only last week a newborn beluga whale died at the park’s Orlando branch.
