For those of us who find it difficult to get a decent night’s sleep, the simple ritual behaviour of getting up and going to bed is a minefield rather than a mundane routine. We end up setting a vicious cycle into motion as we fuel ourselves on caffeine only to crash at the end of the day.

The body is very complicated when it comes to sleep. Anyone who has been too awake to sleep late at night yet can barely keep their eyes open on the commute to work knows this well. There are so many factors to take into account, from your sleep schedule to your diet. The question is less about how much sleep you get than it is about how much quality deep sleep you get, when you eat, what you eat, and a hundred or so other questions.

It would be nice for some simple answers once in a while, or at least a little focus on what we should be doing rather than the long list we have accumulated from years of headlines. Sleep goes on to affect everything in your life. If you are too tired it can affect your professional and personal life.

The results that came from this recent study into what helps us get to sleep may be helpful, but it has little to do with your bed-time routine. Because the the key to a good night’s sleep has little to do with the sleeping process at all.
