30 Oct Saudi Arabia Grants Robot Citizenship, But Critics Say She Has More Rights Than Real Saudi Women

When the critically acclaimed Ex Machina came out in 2015, it was the first time the idea of a classically beautiful female robot had become a part of mainstream culture.

Alicia Vikander stunned moviegoers as the striking Ava in Ex Machina, but as it turns out attractive female robots aren’t just reserved for the big screen.

In fact, Saudi Arabia has their own version of Ava: her name is Sophia, she was developed by Hanson Robotics and has 62 different facial expressions that make her appear like an ordinary human.

What’s more, the Arab nation has made an unprecedented move by granting the robot citizenship. This marks the first time in world history that a robot has been made a citizen.

Sophia’s face was modelled partially on Audrey Hepburn, but despite being made up entirely of synthetic materials, she is now officially a Saudi citizen.

While Sophia is certainly more attractive than the robots we’re used to seeing in sci-fi movies, if you think her looks are the most impressive thing about her, you’re certainly mistaken.

In fact, the humanoid robot is testament to just how advanced artificial intelligence has become over the years.

Sophia has opinions (albeit opinions that were programmed into her), is adept at public speaking and is known for being very forthright.

After being granted Saudi citizenship, Sophia was invited to speak at a conference in Riyadh, the country’s capital. She told the audience she was “honored” to have been made a Saudi citizen.

However, the decision has been met with a polarized reception as many people believe that granting a female robot citizenship undermines the plight of the average woman in the Middle Eastern nation.
