The age we live in has spawned many technological advancements, but unequivocally, the development that we’ve all been waiting on is the creation of artificial intelligent. It is said that science fiction tends to reflect society’s anxieties at the time of their production. If that’s true, then throughout the last decade we’ve all seemingly been preoccupied with the repercussions that robotics technology could have on humanity.

Certainly, with the birth of the domestic computer and the smartphone, the noughties was a time where technology was breaking barriers and so we saw a slew of movies about robots outsmarting humans and taking control of planet Earth. Films such as iRobot and Artificial Intelligence read as cautionary tales, advising us of the costs of humans reaching too far, especially in regards to robots as such advanced intelligence could have the potential to lead to our ruin.

But thankfully, we’re nowhere near to that being a possibility. Whilst the last decade has seen the creation of robots, the most sophisticated droid that we have probably personally encountered has been the robot dog that we gift our nieces and nephews. But scientists have been working on developing robots that could make some of our jobs easier, especially in regards to policing and surveillance.

So if you’ve recently taken a gander around Washington D.C’s malls you may have come into contact with a robot security guard. Now before you start preparing your underground bunker for the impending robot vs. human war, rest assured that robots still have a way to go as this droid accidentally “committed suicide”.
