Reporter Accidentally Slips up and Says the C-Word Live on Air

If you were to ask me to name a job that looks easy, but definitely isn’t, I’d probably say “a newsreader.” Seriously, on paper it sounds pretty cushy. You only work a few hours a day, show up before your shift to be pampered by wardrobe and make-up just like a famous actor chilling out on set. Then you sit in front of the cameras, break out your most winning smile, and read from the teleprompter autocue. It couldn’t be more simple, right?

But there’s one thing about the job that scares me, and that’s bloopers. There are some people who can manage to keep their composure after a slip of the tongue or chance accident, and there are others who fold up like a deck of cards. I definitely fall into the latter category

Think about it: as a news anchor, it’s your job to keep a cool head, remain composed and deliver the daily bulletins and come hell or high water, it’s imperative that you stick to the script. Unfortunately, even the most seasoned and professional newsreaders will occasionally make mistakes, will be forced to deal with an unplanned outburst or some other disastrous accident.

The most mortifying goof I can imagine going through would have to be swearing on camera before the watershed; that way it’s nobody’s fault but your own, and I myself find it particularly difficult to shy away from profanity at the best of times. Yet yesterday, British news reporter Ellie Price committed the cardinal broadcasting sin, when she accidentally dropped the C-bomb in a segment discussing Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.
