Our modern society is more cognisant of causing offense than any other previous generation. Whether this has, in practice, led to a more tolerant, inclusive society is, perhaps, debatable, though at the very least our culture can be fairly described as aware of the problems that racial insensitivity and intolerance perpetuate.

To that end, social media is probably a double-edged sword. Though it has rendered the world a smaller place, and by extension made us all aware of social nuances and preferences of different cultures, social media also grants a platform to anyone, anywhere, to say anything they wish.

In fact, online abuse has become one of the most prevalent issues facing modern culture. While those who choose to spread hateful and intolerant messages online might well be in the vast minority, with the astronomical number of people now using social media, their voices can still be heard.

That same platform can be, and often is, used for good, though. It has never been easier for celebrities and those in influential positions to reach large numbers of people to get their message across. That’s exactly what one reality TV star has done, after growing tired of being referred to as “oriental”.
