06 Sep Police Warn Killer Clown Craze Is About To Return Following The Release Of ‘IT’ Remake
With their creepy painted faces and permanent grimaces, clowns scare a lot of people. The phobia has it’s even got its own name – coulrophobia. Clowns might have been designed to entertain children, but thanks to books and movies like Stephen King’s IT, they’ve got more sinister connotations.
I’ll never forget when a clown tried to throw a lollipop into my hands as a child and accidentally lobbed me in the eye. That’s the only time clowns have scared me, but I’m the first to admit that if I saw a giant, smiling clown’s face peering out of darkness of a drain, I’d run.
Coulrophobia dates back hundreds of years before IT was written. There’s even a monstrous clown in Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers (1836). What’s more is that studies have proven that the majority of children find clowns frightening and not entertaining.
In the fall of 2016, a bizarre “killer clown” craze swept the US and UK, with countless sightings reported of clowns leaping out from bushes and unexpected places brandishing weapons. Now, it’s reportedly making a comeback ahead of the release of the remake of IT this week.
