If you’ve ever been to an Eastern country and you’re from the West, then you’ll appreciate just how different these two corners of the globe are. When I was just sixteen, I travelled to China, and, even though I was exhausted on arrival, I couldn’t close my eyes. I felt like I’d landed on the moon. Seven years later, it still feels like an otherworldly experience. Just about everything in China was different from what I knew – and that included the toilets! So when I managed to find a bottle of Coca-Cola, I jumped at the chance to taste something familiar.
One of the things that amazed me about being in the East was that, despite how different it is, many products us Westerners have come to know and love are sold there too. Western products sold in the East go beyond food products, with many of our most popular celebrities having fans in these countries too. Since the East is a lot more culturally conservative than the West, a lot of advertising that’s perfectly acceptable here isn’t over there. Whilst we must respect this cultural difference, we can’t help but laugh at the censorship on products we’re used to seeing every day.
How To Censor The Uncensorable
Since I can’t read Arabic, I’m not sure how Tinder advertises itself in Egypt, but my friend who lives there told me that the concept of hookups is so alien that people have assumed it’s simply a way to make friends. As we all know, Western products are often advertised in a provocative way; however, this goes against cultural norms in Islamic countries. Despite this, our products are still incredibly popular there and that’s why those who work in advertising have their work cut out for them when they try to censor the uncensorable…
