Since I was a child, I have always wanted to go fishing. There just seems to be something so peaceful and relaxing about the activity. It’s just you, maybe a friend or relative, and the rest of nature. It all seemed so appealing to me at a young age, until I learned the truth of the matter.

Some facts are so obvious no one really tells you, but when I found out that catching fish involved killing them, or at least cutting them with a hook to pull them to the surface, I decided it wasn’t really my thing. I don’t know exactly what I thought the fish were doing, maybe I believed they were obediently holding onto the harmless hook for a laugh, who knows.

But if you don’t mind getting involved with it, fishing can be pretty fun. Once you’ve sat patiently and pulled one in with skill and fortitude, you have still got to deal with a flailing creature in your boat or by the side of the water. After you are through with that and the fish has been killed, you will have no such encounter with the liveliness of that particular fish again. Or at least, that’s what you would assume.
