According to children’s charity NSPCC, around 1 in 20 children in the UK have been sexually abused. Of this number, 1 in 3 children sexually abused by an adult did not tell anyone. The likelihood that victims are likely to stay silent after assault is possibly linked to the fact that the perpetrators are usually known to the victim and their family or friends. NSPCC figures show that over 90% of sexually abused children were abused by someone they knew. Given the fact that nearly 30,000 registered offenders have been convicted of offences against children, this is a shocking statistic.

One of such sex offenders is 51 year old Derek Lamond. In 2009, he was convicted of a sexual offense and now, the farm worker from Dunfermline, Scotland, has now admitted to yet another sexual offense. Speaking to him at his sentencing, Sheriff Derek Reekie told Lamond that his offence was “very serious […] and, to say the very least, a highly unpleasant one”. He added that the severity of his crime was exacerbated by the fact that Lamond assaulted the teenager in her own home and reiterated his history of sexual offenses.

Lamond himself has admitted to committing this crime on May 10 this year. According to reports, the assault in the 14-year-old’s home involved Lamond looking inside her clothing and touching her breast. However, his sentencing has outraged many who think it wasn’t commensurate to the crime he committed.
