A parent should never have to bury a child, so when 13-year-old Athena Orchard passed away in her father’s arms, it was the most heartbreaking moment of his life. Athena had been suffering from a type of bone cancer and lost her battle on May 28, 2014.

In the days and weeks that followed, the family would be faced with a reality without their beloved daughter and sister. Her father Dean was tasked with the responsibility of going through the young teen’s belongings, where he discovered something very unexpected.

On the back of his daughter’s mirror was a secret 3000 word final farewell. “She never mentioned it, but it’s the kind of thing she’d do,” Dean told People Magazine. “She was a very spiritual person, she’d go on about stuff that I could never understand – she was so clever.”

Of course, Athena would have no idea when her message would be discovered, and her family does not know exactly when she wrote it, but her mother, Caroline, said: “Just reading her words felt like she was still here with us, she had such an incredible spirit.”
