The emergency services were called to the 4,000 year old Solfatara crater, after it was reported that a family of three had fallen to their deaths inside. What they found when they arrived is every parent’s worst nightmare…

It is reported that the horror story began when 11 year old, Lorenzo fell into the crater. In a desperate attempt to rescue his stricken son, father Massimiliano Carrer, entered the volcanic crater, which last erupted in 1198 AD. But, once inside, it collapsed, causing him to fall deeper, where he was then overcome with noxious gases.

Desperate to save her husband and son, 42-year-old, Tiziana Zaramella, went to help them. But, the crater collapsed further, causing her to also succumb to the toxic fumes. Meanwhile, their other son, 7-year-old Alessio, who only survived because he had run for help, sobbed above ground.

The family of four, were on a trip to the volcano the day before the boys were expected back at school. It is unknown exactly why the family were in such close proximity to the crater, which is cordoned off by a safety fence to prevent accidents of this nature from occurring.
